KIAHUNA
PLANTATION BEACHHOUSE #418 Upon arrival at the airport at Lihue on Kaua'i you will need to drive to the Kiahuna Plantation in Poipu, approximately 15 miles. As you leave the airport grounds you will come to a stoplight at the intersection of Highways 570 and 51. You can use either to get to Poipu. See the Kaua'i map here. If you go straight through the light you will be using the original route to Poipu, through the old downtown section of Lihue. Follow 570 til you come to the stoplight at the end where you must turn left or right. Turn left and work over into the right-hand lane. Follow this several blocks to the signs indicating Highway 50 and Koloa or Poipu that veers off to the right. If you want to take a more scenic route, turn left at the light as you leave the airport grounds. This is Highway 51 and leads you around the old section of Lihue down to Nawiliwili Bay and Nawiliwili Harbor then it turns right and in a few miles intersects Highway 50 at the Kukui Grove shopping center. Turn left onto Highway 50. Stay on Highway 50 for the next 7 miles or so, until you come to the left-turn lane at the top of a rise that is the turnoff for Koloa and Poipu. This is Highway 520 and as you enter it you will be in the Eucalyptus Tree Tunnel. Watch for views of the ocean as you near the end of the tunnel. When you leave the Tree Tunnel you have a couple of miles left to Koloa or you can take the bypass directly into Poipu. This is on the left about a mile past the Tree Tunnel and is still unmarked. We recommend that for your first visit you continue on 520 into old Koloa town. As you get to Koloa you will come to a stop sign where you must turn left or right. Turn right and go about a block to the Chevron station where you will turn left and continue on to Poipu. Stay on this road for a couple of miles. You will pass the intersection to Spouting Horn, then pass the turnoff for the Sheraton. After the Sheraton turnoff, look on the right for the entrance to Kiahuna Plantation. Turn in here and follow the directions to the Outrigger Check-in Desk.

Kaua'i is a tropical island with a year round temperate climate. The average highs for Poipu are in the mid-high 70s in the winter months and the high 70s to mid 80s in the summer months. Nighttime temperatures drop only 5-8 degrees.
As in all tropical areas, bugs can be a problem. Keep the screen on the sliding door closed and all foods in the refrigerator or in sealed plastic bags. Rinse off dirty dishes after use or put them immediately in the dishwasher. Clean up crumbs as well. You may notice our house geckos from time to time. These little lizards feast on the bugs that do get in and are welcome in all Hawaiian homes. They are harmless to humans.
Pool and Tennis Directly across the street from the Kiahuna Plantation is the Kiahuna Plantation Pool & Tennis Club, with free use of the facilities for our guests.

Also just across the street from the Kiahuna Plantation is the Poipu Shopping Village. This has the usual gift, clothing and art shops, some restaurants, activities brokers, a bank with cash machine and Whalers grocery store. Back in Koloa you will find more of the same in the original plantation town buildings. Sugar cane was first planted in Hawaii on Kaua'i on the Koloa plantation in 1835. There are 2 grocery stores here, Big Save and Sueokas. In the Sheraton there are several boutiques and a sundries store with the usual resort products such as suntan lotion, snack foods and reading material. The Marriott Waiohai also has a snack bar and a Starbucks! The biggest tourist shopping center on the island is north of the airport on the east coast at the Coconut Grove Shopping Center in Kapaa.
For casual or family dining, there are several restaurants in the Poipu Shopping Village that fit the bill, as well as the Garden Pool at the Sheraton and the Ocean Snack Bar at the Sheraton. You can charge to your room at all the Sheraton restaurants. Also nearby is Brenneckes restaurant just across from Poipu Beach State Park, Poipu Beach Broiler just 1/4 mile east of Kiahuna on Poipu Road and Casablanca Restaurant at the Kiahuna Plantation Pool & Tennis Club. For fancier dining we enjoy Plantation Gardens on their lanai overlooking the Moir Gardens. Also, at the Sheraton is Shells restaurant with sweeping views of Kiahuna Beach. In the Poipu Shopping Village are Roys and Keokis also. Late night treats can be found at The Point at the Sheraton. Check out the local guides for more restaurants and their menus.
The Beach You can walk to the beach from the condo in about 8 minutes. No need to bring towels, they are available at no cost (with beach chairs) at the Activities Hut, where you can also rent snorkel equipment, purchase snacks and beach items, get food to feed the fish while snorkeling, all charged to your room, no need for cash. |
